University of Dayton – Summer Honors Engineering Camp

The University of Dayton’s Summer Honors Engineering Camp offers hands-on projects allowing you to experience engineering. In these courses, you will have the opportunity to use our state-of-the-art facilities and interact with our professional faculty and engineering students. Students will be regrouped for each instructional component to foster interpersonal relationships and provide new and exciting intellectual challenges. More simply, the camp has been designed to answer the question, “Why engineering?”

Experience engineering during the Honors Engineering Camp at the University of Dayton, June 17 – 22, 2012. The camp is open to all honor students currently in grades 9, 10, or 11. Notes: PAINTBALL CAMP – It’s not just a camp…. It’s an adventure! PVM was the first camp in the US to offer weeklong paintball camp. With close to 14 years of paintball camps, our instructors will teach campers how to work as a unit in developing tactical game strategies, stealth techniques, and mission leadership skills. It will also focus on the importance of character, honor, and integrity. Throughout the week players will participate in different paintball scenarios on the wooded course and on our fast-paced speedball field. Subject/Content: Nine-day paintball program with a trip to the Michigan Monster Game 
Notes:  Nine days of intense paintball that you won’t get anywhere else. Campers will spend the first week going through extreme paintball training to prepare for the paintball event of a lifetime. At the end of the training they will play in the Michigan Monster Game, a two-day paintball game that will have over 2000 other players, paintball tanks, mercenary squads, and airplane insertion tactics on a 180-acre paintball field. Campers will return on Monday, July 26th and may be picked up following a brief closing program at 7:00 PM that evening.

  • Subject/Content: This course will provide the student the opportunity to be both introduced to the fundamentals of engineering and immersed in a robotics experience that will serve as an exciting, popular vehicle for the delivery of those fundamentals.  While the focus will be on robotics, the course will introduce the student to the various engineering disciplines and teach him or her some engineering fundamentals.  These basic engineering topics will include the engineering design process, teamworking skills, engineering drawing and communications, elements of problem solving with computers, simple programming elements and logic, and engineering professionalism and ethics.  Approximately 60% of the available time will be spent with the students in 2- or 3-person teams in the hands-on activities of designing, building, programming, and testing small autonomous robots made from the LEGO™ Mindstorms NXT System kits.  The other portion of the time will be spent on learning engineering fundamentals, touring on-campus University laboratories, doing robotics research, and developing and practicing engineering skills.  An introduction to solid modeling and working with the Autodesk™ Inventor computer-aided design application will be included.  An interactive bridge-building computer application will also be introduced.
