  • Notes: The Young Women’s Summer Institute is a weeklong program for middle school girls that is full of hands-on activities to provide a foundation for girls’ pursuit in science and technology, engineering and math (STEM).  The projects are interlaced with science and engineering education and career opportunities.  During YWSI, students learn about: the importance of the scientific method using real environmental science data, the fundamentals of computational science, and building a community among themselves and female mentors, including naturalists and computer technologists.  After a week of project-based learning, the students present their findings to their parents and sponsors.  YWSI also recruits teachers as project mentors, developing their confidence to undertake similar projects in their own classrooms.  More information is available at www.ywsi.org.
