Welsh Hills Summer Camp

Program Description:

Mansion Day School is committed to providing your child with an academic summer camp program taught by certified teachers.  In addition to reading, writing, and math instruction, your child will experience eight countries as we “travel” the world.  Each week, we will explore a new country through art projects, musical performances, storytellers, and ethnic foods.  While the mornings are filled with academics, the afternoons are an opportunity for swimming, field trips, and cultural events.  Our travel day runs from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.  Childcare (which is included in the cost of tuition) begins at 7:00 AM and ends at 6:00 PM.  Enrichment Academies are also offered to provide students with a more intensive study of math, writing, robotics, woodworking, music, art, and other areas.

 

Women in Engineering Summer Camp for High School Girls

A six-day residential program sponsored by the University of Dayton that introduces high school women to the wide range of career opportunities available to them in the various fiels of engineering. Participants experience a total immersion into the world of engineering with classroom activities taught by School of Engineering faculty and/or practicing engineers. The young women enjoy an evening of Dinner with an Engineer and hear from professional women engineers who are willing to share and ready to encourage.     With nature as the touchstone for each workshop, the Conservatory’s summer programs allow children to gain hands-on experiences exploring the natural world through the lens of science and the arts.  Each workshop is planned around a theme and includes age appropriate and enriching activities. 

    Several new topics/experiences are planned for camps this summer, including a glass blowing workshop for 16-18 year old students and a special camp to accompany the Conservatory’s exhibition Savage Gardens, opening July 10, 2010!  Popular half-day camps for preschool and kindergarten students are again available as well as full-day camps for 1st-8th grade students.

    • Notes: The Young Women’s Summer Institute is a weeklong program for middle school girls that is full of hands-on activities to provide a foundation for girls’ pursuit in science and technology, engineering and math (STEM).  The projects are interlaced with science and engineering education and career opportunities.  During YWSI, students learn about: the importance of the scientific method using real environmental science data, the fundamentals of computational science, and building a community among themselves and female mentors, including naturalists and computer technologists.  After a week of project-based learning, the students present their findings to their parents and sponsors.  YWSI also recruits teachers as project mentors, developing their confidence to undertake similar projects in their own classrooms.  More information is available at www.ywsi.org.

    • Notes: For over 22 years, Ohio Supercomputer Center has prepared future technology leaders through the Summer Institute. OSC offers a unique two-week residential program that provides talented Ohio high school students entering their sopho­more, junior or senior class and teachers the opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of peers to resolve complex, real-world science and engineering challenges using supercom­puters and cutting-edge research technologies.  After students are selected through a competitive process, they learn about supercomputers and their practical applications such as conducting network forensics to catch hackers, studying the spread of the bird flu and designing computer games.  They gain a competitive edge in future educational and professional pursuits and develop friendships with other with similar interests.  SI also recruits a teacher to participate in the program and mentor students.  More information is available at www.osc.edu/education/si.

    Notes: The Foster Scholarship provides campers, ages 11-13, with the summer opportunity of a lifetime.

    The Foster Scholarship is a full-tuition, merit scholarship that includes room and board, required fees, and uniforms. Preference will be given to those candidates qualifying for financial aid and those residing in Ohio.

    The scholarship is renewable annually. Recipients who continue to excel academically, as a camp leader, and in activities will realize a total value in excess of $15,000 over three summers at Culver.

    To be considered, applicants must have previously demonstrated excellence in academics, citizenship and character.

    Each scholarship recipient is expected to exemplify leadership in his or her cabin and to be in good citizenship standing while attending Woodcraft Camp and to report in September to the Foster family on his or her Woodcraft experience.

    A special added component of the Foster Scholarship will be the opportunity for recipients to attend a designated leadership conference during the school year to be determined on an individual basis for each recipient. The Foster Scholarship is open to campers who have displayed academic, citizenship, and character excellence, and who have been admitted to the Cardinal or Beaver level (ages 11-13) of Culver Woodcraft Camp.

    Culver’s Foster Family Woodcraft Scholarship is open to outstanding students. Competition for the Foster Scholarship will be keen. It is recommended that students apply for admission to Woodcraft Camp and submit their Foster Scholarship application well before the deadline. Applicants must be accepted for admittance to Woodcraft Camp before they will be considered for the Foster Scholarship. The Foster family’s generous gift to Culver will provide scholarship recipients the opportunity to learn, grow, and mature in an international educational environment with campers from around the world.

    Notes:  Camp GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) is designed for young women entering the 7th or 8th grade in fall 2013. This four-day, residential camp for up to 72 young women will be held July 14-17, 2013 and features hands-on activities in math, science and engineering. The camp is designed for the all-around student, not just those who excel academically. A class ratio of 12 students per teacher is emphasized to encourage interaction. All classes and activities are designed and conducted by faculty of Ohio Northern University (ONU) and camp counselors are female college students majoring in engineering, pharmacy, math or the sciences. All sleeping, eating and instructional activities are located on the ONU campus in Ada, OH.
